Client Industry Focus: Qualitative Researchers and Academics Alexandra Lee is a PhD researcher at the University of Auckland and UC Berkeley, focusing on the role of architects in disaster recovery. She conducts field interviews with industry expert and community stakeholders in areas affected by earthquakes, floods and other natural disasters, including Haiti, New Orleans and Christchurch. Like many qualitative researchers, Alexandra records all her interviews on an iPhone and later uses them in her analysis.
The large amount of time required to transcribe interviews by hand prevented Alexandra from progressing her research and analyzing results. However the cost to have a professional transcriber with a perfect level of accuracy was too high. Not being a professional transcriber, it took her a whole day to transcribe interviews that ranged between 1 to 1 ½ hours, which was not sustainable. Alexandra had a particular need for two specific solutions:
Recording interviews in the field: It’s often difficult to organize a time for interview with high-profile community and business leaders, and being prepared at short notice is key to getting access to busy people. Having a convenient and high quality recording device helps researchers be mobile.
Perfect transcript of interviews: Researchers know that “Garbage In” equals “Garbage Out” and place high value on perfect accuracy of the text transcripts. Ms. Lee wanted perfect transcription of results to import into NVivo for coding, and to run further automated analytics and statistical models in SPSS.
To conduct detailed interviews in the field, Alexandra relied on one device that she had with her at all times - her iPhone. The TranscribeMe app
turned it into a powerful recorder and transcription system in one, available anytime at her fingertips. On the other hand, the TranscribeMe website
allowed for finished transcripts to be downloaded in Word and XML formats, perfect for import into coding and analytics software such as NVivo and SPSS.
TranscribeMe utilizes a best-in-class hybrid model that combines speech recognition algorithms with real human transcribers. This allows for a highly accurate transcript that is delivered in a fraction of the time taken by manual transcribers, and accessible through a simple iPhone or Android application. Having access to word-for-word perfect transcripts let Alexandra focus directly on her research thesis, and helped her gain meaningful intelligence from the data, fast.
Client Industry Focus: Academic Research and Business Dr. David Teece is a renowned economist, the Thomas W. Tusher Professor in Global Business and director of the Center for Global Strategy and Governance at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Additionally, he has over 30 years of experience in economic, business, and financial consulting, and is one of the top-10 cited scholars for the last decade. Dr. Teece has been recognized by Accenture as one of the world's top-50 business intellectuals.
As an A-list professor and a businessman, Dr. Teece is short on time to communicate big ideas. Both his roles traditionally involve a heavy amount of writing, and the challenge every day is to become more efficient with time. Dr. Teece needed an easy-to-use solution that would allow him to capture and share ideas, notes, interviews, and lectures, and had a particular need for two specific solutions:
Capturing lecture content: academics know that nothing makes up for the ideas generated during debate in the classroom. Dr. Teece wanted to record his lectures, in particular the presentation of guest speakers to his classes, and easily share them with his students as well as archive for future learning.
Publishing faster: on average, we take five times as long to write down an idea as we do to say it out loud. Dr. Teece dictated his letters and notes into the TranscribeMe smartphone app, and used the transcripts to cut out the time he would have spent writing, allowing him to publish faster.
Through a simple iPhone app
, TranscribeMe provided Dr. Teece with a fast, high quality and well priced transcription service
that works at all hours of the day. By utilizing TranscribeMe’s ability to transcribe both single-speaker notes and messages as well as multi-speaker lecture discussions, Dr. Teece has been able to capture his ideas and notes and have a word-for-word perfect text copy available on demand.
TranscribeMe utilizes a best-in-class hybrid model that combines speech recognition algorithms with real human transcribers. This allows for a highly accurate transcript that is delivered in a fraction of the time taken by manual transcribers, and accessible through a simple iPhone or Android application. These attributes of the service allowed Dr. Teece to capture and share the value of his lectures, ideas and dictation, and he recommends the service to fellow researchers and business professionals.
Industry Focus: Conferences and Events
Social-Loco is a premier San Francisco Bay Area event that focuses on the convergence of social media, location and mobile web, and their impacts on the tech ecosystem, brands, agencies and consumers. Executives from Facebook, Google, Qualcomm, Nokia, Waze, ATTi, Microsoft and leading investors come to address these topics in a highly interactive setting.
With the rise of digital marketing, telecommuting and self publishing, more audio data is being created than ever before. Conference organizers create intense moments where ideas, views and inspiration can flourish – but struggle to create long-term value from this audio content after the event is over.
Social Loco recognized that the content being generated at their events was highly valuable – to attendees, speakers, the press, and outside experts. However, that value was locked away in hard to share and lengthy to listen to audio files. This presented a major problem. The challenges were identified and segmented as follows:
Engaging attendees – people attend events to learn, but cannot be in two places at once. When events run multiple speakers concurrently, or if attendees are having conversations outside the room, valuable learning’s are lost to them.
Engaging the press – feeding timely sound bites to the press is recognized as key to gaining coverage and prestige for events. However, finding those moments by reviewing audio is time consuming, and the window of opportunity for press engagement closes fast.
Establishing thought leadership – content creators are increasingly digitizing their audio in order to create libraries of their work, thoughts, and conversations that arise from unique and unplanned interactions – ones that happen at events often. The ability to easily reference conversations, through a keyword search, allows a continuous conversation about ideas as they develop over time but is difficult to create.
Increasing attendees and revenue through digital search – search engine optimization is critical to sales and marketing, and it’s driven by good content. Event organizers have an ace up their sleeves in this regard. By transcribing and publishing event content online, events content is more likely to be indexed and referenced, and the event is more likely to be attended and highly regarded. This is great but traditional transcription services are costly and time consuming – two factors which negate increased revenues and timely implementation.
Social Loco was looking for a partner to help capture, transcribe, and share their content. However, the service needed to be highly accurate and able to meet the challenging deadlines required for conferences and events. They chose to work with TranscribeMe because of the potential speed and accuracy their new hybrid platform promised to deliver.
Because TranscribeMe is built on a hybrid platform that combines voice recognition technology with crowd-sourced transcribers, Social Loco was able to receive their transcribed audio quickly, with 98% accurate text, all for a fraction of the cost of traditional transcription companies. TranscribeMe’s relationships with audio visual service providers also meant there was zero work for the organizers of Social Loco to do – they created the event, and received the transcript, with no hand-holding required.
Thanks to TranscribeMe, Social Loco was able to engage with their attendees in a new and valuable way. The
conference transcriptions were downloaded over 200 times – from 200 attendees, this demonstrated the true value people found in this content more than any other metric could. Social Loco and TranscribeMe continue to work together to enable search, share and monetization of valuable content created by Bay Area thought leaders.

Client Industry Focus: Market Research
Ipsos is a global market research company with worldwide headquarters in Paris, France. Founded in 1975 and listed on the Paris Stock Exchange, it is an innovative, entrepreneurial, client-focused organization providing research services to clients from FMCG brands, to multinational banks, to national governments. With offices in 84 countries, it is the world’s 3rd largest market research agency.
In a recent project, one of Australia’s major banks approached the Ipsos New Zealand qualitative research team to conduct 12 in-depth interviews and 6 focus groups in Australia to help refine the launch of a new investment product.
The qualitative research team at Ipsos NZ, led by Bart and Diane, were presented with two challenges:
As the product was nearing the final stages of development, the client wanted to discover the preliminary results from the market research in real-time, rather than having to wait a number of weeks for the final report to be delivered.
Since the product related to complex investment-making decisions, the client wanted to connect with research subjects as closely as possible without being present at the interviews, and to capture the feedback of participants in a rich form.
Ipsos New Zealand was looking for a fast, high quality and competitively priced transcription service to partner with for this project. They decided to do a trial partnership with TranscribeMe to see if a company, not an individual transcriber, could produce a comparably priced transcript in better time and at a higher level of quality.
Thanks to the excellent service provided by TranscribeMe, Ipsos NZ was easily able to meet the challenging deadlines of the project. The researchers at Ipsos NZ are excited about trying out the TranscribeMe Smartphone app
, and look forward to making the hassle of interview and focus group transcripts
a thing of the past. The app allows TranscribeMe customers to record interviews and focus groups on their smartphones and order transcriptions with a couple of clicks – all while on the go!
